BSG at St. Paul’s

St. Paul's - Scouts Old Photo
The 1st Scouts Troop (4th December 1947)

Our scout troop was initially started on the 4th of December 1947, with the encouragement of the then Rector Fr. J. A. Miranda SJ who had seen scouting in foreign countries on one of his visits to Europe. Since then scouting flourished in our school and we had one of the best troops in the whole of the former Bombay State, an opinion expressed by no less a person than the Chief Commissioner of Scouts Mr. R. B. Godrej (in the mid 1960’s).

A mention of Scouts in St. Paul’s is seen in the school annual, December 1957, where it is mentioned, “On 16th November, the day chosen for the Child Protection Week celebrations, St. Paul’s was once more the scene of a Rally of all the Scouts and Guides in Belgaum.” This shows that the Scouts of St. Paul’s had always been among the best in the region.

However, we haven’t been able to find much details about our scouts troop between the 1970’s to mid 1980’s. Later, the start of the new official Scouts troop in St. Paul’s was in 1990, soon after Master Joe Fernandes (Former Scoutmaster) completed his official training for the movement. For over 15 years, he was the Pillar that held Scouts high in the school, and as a matter of fact, he even supported the Guides from St. Joseph’s whenever they needed, especially during Jamboree camps and social service activities.

After his retirement in around 2005, there were no scouts from St. Paul’s for a few years up to 2013.

The present Scouts Master is Mr. Gregory Mendes and Cubs Mistress is  Mrs. Sabina Kolkar & Mrs. Muriel Buthelo.
